I am going to share with you a great irony about web design… Business owners build websites to help their business sell….(obvious) but in most cases they don’t build a web design that sells, they build a web design that loses them money! (for reasons that are not so obvious). Look, I know this sounds harsh, even arrogant, but it’s absolutely true: most people have no idea of the content and structure of a web design that sells, and furthermore, they don’t even realize that they don’t have the first idea about the content and structure of a web design that sells. Given this lack of expertise, the classic mistake made by 9 out of 10 business owners is this; they create their website based on a mixture of what they think will look good, and a mish mash of content and ideas they have copied from their competitors, under the misguided perception that these people know what they are doing, when in most cases, they don’t. The result? Their business ends up with a web design that doesn’t sell efficiently, so they end up leaving money on the table every day, and a fantastic opportunity they have to get an edge on their competitors and improve their profits is wasted. Here it is… most web designers wouldn’t know the first thing about building a web design that sells… As shocking as this sounds, it’s absolutely true, and as soon as I tell you why, your past experience with websites (if you already have one) will probably make sense. The reason why most web designers don’t know how to build a website that sells is because most web designers are graphic artists. FACT: Graphic artists are NOT marketing people, (in most cases) they DON’T know the first thing about selling, online marketing strategies, Search Engine Optimisation, copywriting or any of the other things that really matter if you want your website to sell. Mostly they just know how to make things look nice! Does it make sense to you to trust a qualified artist to build one of the most important strategic marketing assets of your business? Of course not! That’s like asking an artist to do your tax return…its stupid! This silly notion only gets sillier when the graphic artist asks the business owner to write their own sales copy.
